When Judy Diez d’Aux and Meerenai Shim commissioned me to write a piece for low flute choir, I asked whether they wanted something serious or something funny. I was so glad when they said funny! Because the low flutes are well adapted to mimic a barbershop quartet, I took the classic “Sweet Adeline” and turned it into a battle between Adeline and the bumptious Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair. Each pushes for dominance and dissonance ensues. Premiered at the National Flute Association convention in San Antonio, Aug. 2024.
